LUCKNOW, Aug. 11 -- More than 400 MBBS interns of King George's Medical University (KGMU) staged a protest near the administrative building on Monday, demanding an increase in their monthly internship stipend from Rs.12,000 to Rs.30,000. The protest, which began around 1 pm, saw interns highlighting their long working hours and responsibilities involving critical clinical care, patients and their attendants. They said the existing stipend was not commensurate with their workload and demanded that the stipend be uniformly increased to Rs.30,000 for MBBS interns in all government medical colleges across Uttar Pradesh. The students also pointed to disparities in internship stipends across states and urged the government to bring the stipend in Uttar Pradesh at par with other government medical institutions. Professors extended support to the protesting interns.
