PRAYAGRAJ, July 17 -- A domestic dispute took a grisly turn in Thatheri Bazar area here on Thursday afternoon when a man allegedly attempted to slit his wife's throat with a knife in front of their two children before walking into a police station with the weapon and informing officers about the attack. Police officials rushed to the house after the accused reached Kotwali police station and admitted the injured woman to SRN Hospital, where her condition remains critical. The accused has been taken into custody and is being questioned, police said. According to police, Abhishek Gupta, a resident of Thatheri Bazar, has been married to 30-year-old Shashi Gupta, a native of Kada Dham in Kaushambi district, for around 12 years. The couple has two children, a 10-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter. Abhishek sells hookah flavours in Chowk, while Shashi runs a beauty parlour in Handia. Police said the couple had been facing marital discord for the past few days. Around 1 pm on Thursday, an argument reportedly escalated, following which Abhishek allegedly attacked Shashi with a knife kept inside the house and tried to slit her throat in the presence of their children. After the assault, he allegedly left his wife bleeding at the house and walked to Kotwali police station carrying the knife, where he informed police about the incident. On receiving the information, police immediately reached the house and shifted the critically injured woman to SRN Hospital for treatment. Ravi Modanwal, the injured woman's brother, said his nephew had called him to inform him about the assault. He immediately asked a relative living in Sohbatiyabagh to rush to the house, but by then Abhishek had allegedly attacked Shashi and left for the police station. Assistant commissioner of police (Kotwali) Ravi Gupta said, "Preliminary investigation suggests that the attack followed a dispute between the husband and wife.
