Man sets self ablaze outside Kanpur PS, cops hurt trying to rescue him
Kanpur, July 15 -- A 35-year-old man allegedly doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire outside the Maharajpur police station on Tuesday, leaving three police personnel injured while trying to rescue him.
Eyewitnesses said the man arrived at the police station carrying a can of petrol, poured it over himself and set himself ablaze.
SHO Janardan Singh, a sub-inspector and a constable sustained burns while using water and blankets to extinguish the flames and pull him to safety. All three are undergoing treatment at UHM Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the man repeatedly shouted, "I want justice," as he was engulfed in flames. He was initially taken to Kashiram Hospital and later referred to UHM, where his condition remains critical.
Additional DCP (East) Shiva Singh said the incident appears to be linked to a domestic dispute. The man's wife had lodged a complaint at the same police station last week, alleging assault, following which a case was registered against him after a medical examination.
"He came to submit an application against his wife and set himself on fire near the police station premises," Singh said, adding that the application did not contain any allegation against the police or any complaint regarding police action.
The man, who has been married since 2015 and has two children, had come to the police station to submit the application. Police are investigating whether any other factor led to the extreme step. htc...
