Man's death in mishap sparksprotest on Gkp-Vns highway
GORAKHPUR, May 14 -- The death of a 30-year-old man in a late-night road accident near Chhinau Betwa village under the Belipar police station limits in Gorakhpur district triggered violent protests on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane highway, during which an angry mob allegedly attacked police personnel with stones, injuring two constables, officials said on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Krishna Nishad, was killed after his motorcycle was reportedly hit by a dumper truck parked on the roadside late Tuesday night.
Following the accident, enraged villagers blocked the highway and demanded compensation for the victim's family along with strict action against those responsible. Traffic remained disrupted for nearly three hours.
The situation turned violent after locals alleged that the dumper driver, who had earlier been caught by villagers and handed over to the police, was allegedly released by the police personnel.
SP (South) Dinesh Puri said when police teams reached the spot to clear the blockade and pacify the protesters, some members of the crowd allegedly turned violent and began pelting the police force with stones.
"Two policemen, identified as Akash Bharti and Ajeet Yadav, sustained minor injuries in the stone-pelting incident. Additional police force was rushed to the spot and the situation was later brought under control," police officials said.
Police have registered cases against 10 named persons and several unidentified individuals on charges related to violence, obstructing government duty and damaging public order. So far, seven accused have been arrested.
The body of Krishna Nishad was sent for post-mortem examination and normal traffic movement on the highway was later restored, police said....
