Dehradun, Aug. 23 -- A 34-year-old man was arrested near the Nepal border for allegedly cheating a nursing assistant of Rs.32 lakh on the promise of securing her a government job and marriage, police said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Charu Chandra Joshi, was arrested from the Aincholi area of Pithoragarh on Friday after it was learnt that he was allegedly trying to flee to Nepal to evade arrest, police said. He was subsequently brought to Dehradun on transit remand. According to police, the woman, who works as nursing staff at a private hospital, lodged a complaint at Nehru Colony police station on August 17. She alleged that she met Joshi through a matrimonial website and he introduced himself as a drug inspector in the health department. Joshi allegedly claimed to have contacts with senior health department officials and promised to get her a government job. He also allegedly promised to marry her and took around Rs.32 lakh from her on different occasions. Police registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. SSP Pramendra Dobhal said, "During the probe, police found that Joshi had previously been booked in several cases involving alleged fraud in the name of government jobs. A police team tracked his movements after learning that he was frequently changing locations and was attempting to reach Nepal via Pithoragarh." According to police, Joshi had worked as a contractual pharmacist in the health department in 2016. He was removed from service after being jailed in 2022 in connection with fraud and rape cases registered in Nainital district. After his release, he allegedly used his former employment and claimed departmental connections to deceive job seekers, promising them government jobs in exchange for money. "Joshi admitted during questioning that he had used most of the Rs.32 lakh received from the complainant to settle matters related to cases previously registered against him. His claims are being verified through documentary and other evidence," the SSP said. Investigators have so far found no evidence that Joshi was connected with any examination agency or anyone involved in the government recruitment process, police said....
