Haldwani, May 2 -- A man accused of trying to forcefully convert people was arrested in Nainital on Thursday evening, officers said on Friday. The accused was identified as Mohammad Yunus, who lived in Bhimtal, said police, adding that he was accused of contacting women under various aliases and using group activities to lure them into converting. "He would gain the trust of women through activities such as photography, video shoots, trekking and music sessions and subsequently bring them under his influence," said Manjunath TC, senior superintendent of police, Nainital. He added that Yunus was arrested based on a complaint filed by another resident of Bhimtal, who alleged that the accused established contact with her in 2020 and introduced himself under a false name. "He induced the complainant to spend nearly Rs.17 lakh on various equipment including cameras, lenses and mobile phones. Later, on the pretext of marriage, he gradually began pressuring her to convert her religion," the SSP said. He added that subsequently other victims came forward and lodged complaints alleging similar exploitation and pressure to undergo religious conversion. He said that based on the complaints, the police registered an FIR against the accused at Mallital police station under Sections 3 and 5 of the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2018 and Sections 115, 319 and 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and initiated an investigation. The SSP added that a special team comprising personnel from Bhimtal police, the SIT and the SOG was constituted to arrest the accused. "The team conducted continuous raids at locations where Mohammad Yunus was suspected to be hiding. However, he initially managed to evade arrest. On Thursday evening, he was arrested from the Nainital region," he said. "The illicit practice of religious conversion will not be tolerated in the district. In such cases, swift and strict action will be ensured under a zero-tolerance policy," the SSP added....
