Man ends life after jumping into Yamuna; wife follows, rescued
PRAYAGRAJ, July 21 -- A tragic incident took place in Prayagraj on Sunday night when a man allegedly ended his life by jumping into the Yamuna from the New Yamuna Bridge following a domestic dispute with his wife. Moments later, his wife also jumped into the river but was rescued by boatmen and divers present at the spot.
The deceased, a resident under Cantonment police station in Prayagraj earned his livelihood as a vegetable vendor. According to police, an argument broke out between him and his wife on Sunday night.
Following the dispute, the husband left home in an upset state.
It is alleged that he subsequently called his wife and informed her that he inte- nded to take his own life by jumping from the New Yamuna Bridge.
On receiving the call, the wife also rushed to the bridge. Eyewitnesses said the husband remained on the bridge for some time while talking on the phone before jumping into the Yamuna.
His body was later recovered.
Meanwhile, after learning of her husband's death, the wife also jumped into the river. Fortunately, boatmen and divers were present nearby and quickly rescued her.
Station house officer (SHO) of Kydganj police station Pritam Tiwari said preliminary investigations indicate that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between the couple.
The body of the man has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further proceedings are underway....
