PRAYAGRAJ, July 6 -- A 52-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death with a cricket bat following a dispute over payment of wages at a house construction site in Pratapgarh district late Saturday night, police said. The main accused, a mason, has been arrested, while efforts are on to nab three other accused named in the case, they added. The incident took place in Baghumar village under Antu police station limits. The deceased, Ram Milan Gupta, who lived with his family in Delhi, had returned to his native village about a month ago with his wife and was constructing a house on the outskirts of the village. According to police, the labourers approached Gupta after the day's work seeking payment of their pending wages. The discussion soon escalated into a heated argument, following which the workers allegedly assaulted him with a cricket bat lying at the construction site, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the Government Medical College hospital, where doctors declared him dead. On the complaint of the victim's wife, police registered a murder case against mason Ramraj and three labourers-- Raju Vanvasi, Monu and Suraj. Acting on a tip-off, Antu police arrested the main accused, Ramraj, from near Jaitipur trisection late Saturday night. Station House officer Abhishek Singh Sirohi said the bat allegedly used in the murder was recovered at the instance of the accused. Ramraj was produced before a court and sent to jail, while police teams have been constituted to arrest the remaining accused. During interrogation, Ramraj allegedly told police that Gupta had not paid the labourers their wages for several days. On Saturday night, all the workers went together to demand the pending payment, but an argument broke out, during which he picked up a bat lying nearby and assaulted Gupta, resulting in his death, police said. Meanwhile, tension prevailed at the Government Medical College hospital on Sunday afternoon when the victim's family staged a brief protest outside the hospital police outpost after alleging that no vehicle had been arranged to shift the body to the postmortem house.
