Man arrested for anti-national acts 'highly radicalised': STF
Dehradun, June 20 -- A resident of Udham Singh Nagar district arrested by the Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) for allegedly indulging in anti-national activities had become highly radicalised and appeared willing to go to any extent in pursuit of his ideology, officials said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Salauddin of Gadarpur in Udham Singh Nagar district, was arrested on Thursday after STF investigators allegedly found material linked to radical ideologies on his mobile phone.
Senior superintendent of police (STF) Ajai Singh said the accused appeared to have been deeply influenced by extremist content and had expressed views indicating a willingness to undertake serious acts in furtherance of his beliefs.
He said they cannot rule out the possibility that he may have carried out a fidayeen-style attack had he remained unchecked.
"During questioning, it emerged that the accused had become highly radicalised. He appeared mentally prepared to go to any extent and was influenced by developments that he perceived as being against his community.
These aspects are being examined as part of the investigation," Singh said.
Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said investigators are probing the source of explosive-related material allegedly recovered during the operation and are also examining the accused's contacts with others who shared similar ideological views.
"The primary information suggests he got detonators from a Telangana man. He was in touch with a man from Rampur in UP as well," the official said....
