Meerut, March 19 -- A wanted criminal carrying a reward of Rs.1 lakh was killed in an encounter in Saharanpur district on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Mohd Shahzad, 40, was allegedly involved in organised cow slaughter activities and had multiple criminal cases against him. Two constables were injured during the exchange of fire. The encounter took place around 3 pm on Tuesday in Sherpur village under the Mirzapur Police Station area. According to police officials, Shahzad was on his way to carry out another incident of cow slaughter when teams from Mirzapur and Fatehpur police stations intercepted him. Police said Shahzad was surrounded and asked to surrender, but he opened fire upon the team in an attempt to escape. During the firing, two constables, Somendra Singh and Kuldeep Kumar, sustained bullet injuries to their hands. Both injured personnel were rushed to a hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. In retaliation, the police team took position and fired back, injuring Shahzad. He collapsed on the spot and was immediately taken to the Community Health Centre in Behat. Due to his critical condition, he was referred to the district hospital, where doctors later declared him dead. Deputy inspector general (DIG) Abhishek Singh visited the injured constables at the hospital and commended their bravery. He personally met the personnel and praised their efforts in the operation. Police officials stated that Shahzad was a notorious and habitual offender involved in multiple criminal activities.
