LUCKNOW, June 10 -- Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly speaker Satish Mahana on Tuesday said the responsibility of public representatives extends beyond merely enacting laws and includes fostering public trust in the legislature. "An honest and people-centric image of legislators forms the foundation of the credibility of democratic institutions, and their commitment to the public serves as the true lifeline of democracy," Mahana said while addressing the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-II (North Zone) Conference in Chandigarh. He said democracy becomes strong and effective only when public representatives live up to people's expectations and maintain their trust, emphasising that upholding the prestige and credibility of democratic institutions is the collective responsibility of all elected representatives. He also highlighted contemporary challenges facing democracy. "In changing times, it is the collective responsibility of all to preserve the dignity and transparency of democratic institutions and maintain public trust," he said. On the occasion, the Lok Sabha Speaker and speakers of various state assemblies commended his working style and leadership. Mahana said that under the leadership of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the legislature in Uttar Pradesh has been further strengthened and the state has achieved remarkable milestones across various sectors.
