PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 11 -- As part of a major fire-safety measure for Magh Mela 2027, kitchens in camps, offices and shops will not be permitted inside tents and must instead be set up within designated tin-shed enclosures. The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Prayagraj Mela Authority chaired by divisional commissioner Dr Lokesh M, as preparations gather pace for the annual religious congregation, scheduled to begin on January 15, 2027. The decision comes in the wake of major fire incidents during the previous Mahakumbh and several Magh Melas, prompting officials to prioritise pilgrims' safety and prevent accidents. The meeting also approved dedicated charging stations for electric vehicles, whose use has increased in recent years. Officials said designated charging points would discourage people from charging vehicles at unauthorised locations, thereby reducing the risk of short circuits and fires. The divisional commissioner directed mela officer Rishiraj to prepare a comprehensive plan to prevent incidents, including minor ones, and ensure the safety of life and property throughout the mela. Officials discussed various proposed initiatives for the upcoming congregation, with pilgrim safety emerging as the key priority. The meeting also reviewed the status of infrastructure-related tenders. The levelling of land, considered crucial for starting ground-level preparations, was discussed, and officials were directed to begin the work without delay. In another decision, the basic education officer (BSA) and district inspector of schools (DIOS) have been directed to organise fancy-dress competitions in schools in November and December on mythological themes. Winners will be honoured during the Magh Mela, where a further competition will also be organized, informed officials. The tourism department has been asked to develop entrance gates based on mythological themes. The North Central Zone Cultural Centre and the culture department will jointly oversee selfie points and organise art and cultural programmes during the mela. Mela officer Rishiraj said heads of all departments had also been asked to suggest innovative ideas for the upcoming Magh Mela....
