LUCKNOW, Aug. 11 -- Lucknow's Shivendra Yadav clinched the silver medal in the boys' 13-14 years 50m breaststroke at the 42nd Sub-Junior National Swimming Championship in Jaipur on Monday, recording a personal best of 00:31.94. This was the second medal for Uttar Pradesh at the Jaipur's meet as UP boys had a silver medal in 4x100m medley relay by clocking 02:09.69 seconds last week. The team members were Raj Chauhan, Ayush Sonkar, Manas Singh and Raghav Yadav. A podium finish on Monday marked Shivendra's first national-level medal and a significant milestone in a sporting journey that began off the football pitch. For the last three years, he has been training at the Sports Authority of India's pool here in Sarojani nagar. Gold went to Sourav Putel of Odisha, who touched the wall in 00:31.02, while Assam's Hridspandan Sarmah took bronze in 00:32.08. Shivendra's time kept him within striking distance of the leader, underscoring rapid progress in his breaststroke technique and race execution. In fact, Shivendra originally grew up as a footballer but switched focus to swimming at his father's encouragement. His father Ram Yadav, who is CM's security, is no stranger to the pool as he also happens to be a former medalist for Uttar Pradesh Police at the All India Police Aquatics Meet and that legacy helped steer Shivendra toward competitive swimming. "I love football, but it was my father who told me to do swimming," Shivendra admitted after his race, "But I soon began to fall in love with the sport. I'm happy with this success and want to aim higher," said on Monday Coaches praised Shivendra's dedication and race maturity, noting improvements in his start and streamline that made the difference over 50 metres. With this silver at the national sub-junior level, Shivendra, who had two bronze medals at the SGFI's Aquatics Meet last year. now sets his sights on further national events and longterm development in breaststroke. Tektro Club defeated Tektro Reserve 3-0 to make it to the final of the District Football League-2026, at the Chauk Stadium here on Monday. Vikash (4th minute), Kartik (21st minute), and Aditya (31st minute) were the scorers.
