LUCKNOW, Sept. 7 -- Young Lucknow shuttler Mansi Singh produced another strong showing in her promising career by finishing runner-up in the Polytron Pontianak Indonesia Masters Super 100 event on Sunday. Mansi lost to China's Xu Wen Jing 16-21, 8-21 in the final after an impressive run that included a hard-fought semi-final win over higher rated Rachel Chan of Canada. Trailing by four points early in the first game, world No.76 Mansi fought to get to 9-11 at the break. However, Xu wore her down with long rallies before winning the game. In the second game, Mansi couldn't match Xu's speed and lost tamely at GOR Terpadu Ahmad Yani. "It was good learning for me. I could have done well, if I had not lost my rhythm in the second game," said the Sports Authority of India National Centre of Excellence, Hamirpur trainee over phone. Mansi's run reflects her rise from junior success into the senior ranks. In the semis, Mansi beat the 50th ranked Rachel 21-17, 18-21, 21-18, closing out a 59-minute battle in style. In the first round, she beat Hong Kong's Elsa Caitlin 21-6, 21-7 and Nurani Ratu Azzahra 21-15, 21-13 in the next round. Mansi beat Sarunrak Vitidsarn 21-17, 21-18 in the quarter-final. Mansi trained at the Prakash Padukone Academy in Bengaluru for almost six years after shifting base from the Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy. She joined coach Prem Lal at the SAI centre in 2024. Mansi's badminton journey began early and has been marked by quick progress. She won her first competitive tournament in 2015, followed by the state junior championship and the U-13 All India title in 2016. She won the U-17 All India title in 2017 and then produced a standout 2019 season when she won the Junior Nationals and completed a double at the All India Sub Junior Ranking Tournament in Assam by taking the singles and doubles crowns. An early international breakthrough came in 2020 when she took bronze in girls' singles at the Dutch Junior International in Haarlem. In the senior circuit, Mansi has kept moving upward. She won the women's singles at the India International Challenge in Mangaluru and the senior All India ranking tournament in Lucknow. "Mansi has been a fine talent and her performance in a Super 100 event marks a big milestone for her. She could have done well but made some unforced errors at crucial junctures in the first game and things changed dramatically," said Prem Lal....
