LSG looking for a way back into the mix
LUCKNOW, April 28 -- Technically, Lucknow Super Giants aren't out of the playoffs race as they have four points and can earn 12 more, if they win all their remaining six matches, but for sure they are down, frustrated and want to make use of almost a week's off time to rebuild their strategies in IPL 2026.
If skipper Rishabh Pant is feeling pressure and needs a break, team's chief coach Justin Langer laments adaptation failures following the agonizing Super Over defeat to three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday night, their fourth loss on home turf in as many matches.
Undoubtedly, LSG's campaign took another gut-wrenching turn as they surrendered a strong position in a thrilling Super Over loss to KKR on Sunday night. Despite a magnificent bowling display led by Mohsin Khan's five-wicket haul, LSG leaked 43 runs in the final two overs on a low, tricky pitch, paving the way for KKR's comeback powered by their world-class spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine.
Langer didn't mince words about the pitch conditions. "We didn't adapt today to the black soil which was slower and lower and spun a little bit," he said, frustration evident. "So, it's incredibly frustrating. I feel for the fans, I feel for our supporters, I feel for everyone that follows us. We're not adapting to the conditions as well as we should be."
This marked yet another instance where LSG faltered late, echoing patterns from earlier games. Langer reflected on the game's turning point.
"I think if you look at the game, and probably this has happened a few too many times this season, Mohsin Khan got five wickets. Magnificent, absolutely brilliant bowling. I thought we started well. Shami started really well. Prince did a really good job. Our spinners held the middle, but then we went for 43 runs in the last two overs on a pretty low wicket, a tougher batting wicket. So, that hurts. That's what T20 cricket's about. You always talk about T20, you try to negate the really big overs. We had two at the end."
For 18 overs, LSG held the edge, but those final blows gave KKR a "sniff," as Langer put it. "We felt like for 18 overs we were on top of the game. And then they got 40-odd runs, they got a bit of a sniff. They've got two world-class spinners, obviously, Varun and Sunil. So, they would have felt like they were in the game. And for a lot of that time, we felt like we were still in the game and just fell behind. It got a bit exciting in the end, but not exciting enough." he added.
Amid the disappointment, Langer reserved high praise for Mohsin Khan, whose athleticism shone through. "Yeah, I said a few nights ago, I thought he and Prince will soon play cricket for India. The thing about Mohsin, he is an incredible athlete... You can tell a great athlete by the way they throw a ball. And you watch Mohsin throw a ball. It is amazing. Watch him move."
"And then he hits this incredible length... He's done some great work with Bharat Arun. He spent a few months at Bharat's academy in Chennai leading up to this all off his own back. And he did it and he worked hard and he's getting fit. That's why he was so disappointed when he heard he's quiet after the first game. It wouldn't surprise me if it's a great thrill for India to have him in their team in the not too distant future." he further said.
On batting woes, Langer defended sending Nicholas Pooran against Narine, citing stats. "We knew that Sunil had bowled it. And if you look at Nicky's record, he's seen Sunil more than anyone in world cricket. So, we felt that he was still the best. But it didn't come off. He is facing mental pressure. And it's amazing, isn't it? Even great players like him. There's probably no greater T20 player currently in the world over the last few years. It just goes to show he's human. And you can't fake confidence. We all try to. You can look confident, but confidence comes from getting your processes right."
However, Langer urged resilience. "We'll keep being positive. We've got seven days off now until our next game. So it's a chance for us to have a look at things, if we need to make any changes or where we're going to go. But you've got to stay positive. If you don't, no point being here."
Captain Rishabh Pant also urged for a break and then aimed for a fresh start. "We definitely need a break. We are going to refresh. It is always going to be a pressure game. We need to take accountability from each and every guy. It has to be about the entire team," he said in a post-match conversation....
