LPG tanker crash sparks fire at Kaushambi toll plaza; one dead
PRAYAGRAJ, June 27 -- An LPG tanker caught fire after it allegedly crashed into a divider near the Sihori toll plaza in the Kokhraj area of Kaushambi district on Friday morning. The driver was killed and eight toll plaza employees suffered burn injuries. The fire also destroyed 17 motorcycles, two cars, the toll plaza's control room and all toll booths.
The incident took place at around 6 am on the Kanpur-Varanasi highway. Officials said the LPG-laden tanker hit a divider near the toll plaza cabin. The impact caused a gas leak, and the tanker was engulfed in flames within moments.
Six fire engines were sent to the spot. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after a lengthy operation. Senior police officers, including Kaushambi superintendent of police Satyanarayan Prajapat and circle officer Satyendra Kumar Tiwari, reached the site to supervise the rescue and relief work.
During the investigation, police identified the deceased driver as Dharmendra Dubey ,40, a resident of Nihaon village in Mirzapur district. His charred skeletal remains were recovered from the driver's cabin. Police said he was transporting LPG at Kanpur to Varanasi when the accident took place.
Kaushambi superintendent of police Satyanarayan Prajapat said eight people were injured in the incident.
"Six persons with serious burn injuries have been referred to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj for advanced treatment, while two others were treated locally and discharged," he said, adding that further investigation is underway.
The injured were identified as toll collector Sanjay Nirmal, Ravindra Kumar Pandey, Anil Kumar, shift in-charge Alok, supervisor Hiramani, Krishna Pal, Atul Mishra and gunman Ravindra Pandey.
Of them, Anil Kumar, Alok, Hiramani, Krishna Pal, Atul Mishra and Ravindra Pandey suffered serious burn injuries. They were first taken to the Government Medical College Hospital before being referred to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj for advanced treatment.
Anil Kumar's condition is critical.
Traffic on the Kanpur-Varanasi highway remained disrupted for nearly three hours, leading to a long traffic jam on the busy route. After the fire was largely brought under control, authorities reopened toll lanes on both sides to restore the smooth movement of vehicles....
