Locals seek action against rape accused
Dehradun, July 21 -- Local residents in Tehri Garhwal on Monday staged a protest to demand action against a local man who was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl along with a Dalit friend. Both men were allegedly assaulted by the girl's family members earlier this month, which led to the death of the Dalit man. The accusations arose after the girl was recently admitted to hospital. Her mother subsequently filed the complaint, which led to the registration of the FIR against both men, identified as Ketan Lal and Diwakar Dimri The protest was staged as a road blockade on the Lambgaon-Uttarkashi road. Traffic was disrupted for several hours as a result. Protesters sought Dimri's arrest, a fair probe and speedy justice for the survivor.
"The police has failed to take any action against the accused who is accused of raping the minor, despite a memorandum given to the police earlier. We want immediate arrest of the accused. Secondly, we are not satified with the IO in the case, the IO should be changed. We want our demands to be fulfilled or our protest will be intensified," said Manisha Panwar, the local block pramukh.
Tehri Garhwal senior superintendent of police (SSP) Shweta didn't respond to requests for comment. The development comes weeks after police arrested four people, including the girl's father and grandfather, in connection with the alleged murder of Ketan Lal. According to the deceased's family, Ketan was beaten to death for being in a relationship with the minor, who belonged to a different caste. "Recently, the girl fell ill and was taken to hospital, where her medical examination was conducted. Based on the mother's complaint, we have now registered the FIR," a senior police officer said.
"A DNA examination will bring clarity to the case," said another senior police officer.
According to the FIR registered in the murder case, the girl allegedly called Ketan and Dimri to Kholgarh late on a Sunday night. Police alleged that the accused assaulted both men. Ketan later died during treatment. In his complaint, Ketan's father alleged that girl's father called him early on Monday and informed him about the assault.
"He said they had badly beaten both boys. When I reached the spot, I found my son in a severely injured condition and his friend also injured. My son told me that girl's father and other members of his family had assaulted them with sticks and iron rods," the complaint stated.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS, along with relevant provisions of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act....
