LUCKNOW, March 3 -- The Ashiana police on Monday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping and raping a minor after drugging her inside a vehicle. The arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim's mother on February 28. "The accused, identified as Keshav Tharu, alias Mohit Tharu, is a resident of Krishna Nagar and originally hails from Unnao," said a police statement. According to the police, the incident occurred when the accused allegedly lured the minor girl out of her house at night, forced her to inhale an intoxicating substance, and subsequently committed the assault inside a car. While the police initially registered the FIR under general provisions, the investigation team upgraded the charges to more stringent sections of the BNS and the POCSO Act as more evidence surfaced. Police added Section 351(3) for criminal intimidation and Section 3/4(2) of the POCSO Act for penetrative sexual assault, alongside existing charges of rape and kidnapping. "Acting on a tip-off, the Ashiana police team intercepted Tharu near the Aurangabad underpass bridge on Sunday night. He was taken into custody at about 8:15 PM after his identity was verified," said police. The Lucknow Police said that the accused has been sent to judicial custody.
