PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 9 -- The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested a man carrying a Rs.50,000 reward for his capture in connection with a 2023 illegal liquor smuggling case registered in Prayagraj, officials said on Saturday. The accused, Ajay Jain, a resident of Zirakpur in Punjab, was arrested around 7.15pm on Friday from the Industrial Area Phase-I area under HSIIDC police station in Badi Gannaur, Sonipat district, Haryana, said DySP Shailesh Pratap Singh of the STF's Prayagraj field unit. Jain was wanted in case No. 393/2023 registered at Nawabganj police station under sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code and sections 60(1), 63 and 72 of the Excise Act. The STF said Jain was an active member of an interstate liquor smuggling gang. A mobile phone and Rs.2,060 in cash were recovered from him. Acting on information that Jain was hiding in Sonipat, a Prayagraj STF team led by inspector Jai Prakash Rai, under the supervision of Singh, traced him with the assistance of a team headed by sub-inspector Ranendra Kumar Singh. During interrogation, Jain allegedly told the STF that he operated the smuggling network with his associate Navdeep Singh alias Navi Grewal alias Lucky Singh and others.
