Lightning strike kills shepherd in Pithoragarh
Haldwani/Pithoragarh, May 28 -- A shepherd was killed after being struck by lightning in Pithoragarh district, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident was reported from Dharchula town and marks the second lightning-related fatality reported from the region this month, they added.
The deceased was identified as Ram Singh (48), said Dharchula sub-divisional magistrate Ashish Joshi.
He added that the body could only be retrieved from the remote high-altitude area and returned to his family after a post-mortem examination on Wednesday.
According to a group of shepherds had gone to the high Himalayan Bugyals in Dharchula to graze their sheep when the incident occurred during the night of May 25-26. "He had gone to the alpine meadows of the high Himalayan region specifically to graze his sheep," said Joshi.
The officer said the incident was formally reported to the administration by the Anwal Community Development Committee.
"President of the Anwal Community Development Committee Narendra Singh Bisht informed the Tehsil administration about the incident. Subsequently, a joint team of police and administration rushed to the spot, retrieved the body from the high Himalayan region and handed it over to the family members after post-mortem," added the sub-divisional magistrate.
According to officials, this is the second reported case of death caused by lightning in Dharchula within the past two weeks. On May 11, Tej Singh (35), a resident of Khet village in Dharchula, had also died after being struck by lightning while staying at Rapkia Bugyal.
Officials aware of the matter said that Singh had gone there to graze sheep and goats and to collect Keeda Jadi, a medicinal caterpillar fungus found in high-altitude Himalayan regions....
