PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 18 -- Heavy rain and lightning claimed one life and critically injured a pregnant woman in separate incidents in Prayagraj and Kaushambi districts on Monday. In the first incident, a 24-year-old man died after being struck by lightning while working in a field near his home in Khurramshahpur village of Handia tehsil in Prayagraj. The victim was identified as Dinesh Banvasi, son of Pahadi Banvasi. He was in a field a short distance from his home when lightning struck him. Local residents rushed to the spot and informed his family. Police from Sarai Mamrez police station reached the village and sent the body for post-mortem examination after completing the required legal formalities. Villagers gathered at the victim's home and demanded financial assistance for his family from the district administration under government norms for lightning-related deaths. In a separate incident, a pregnant woman was critically injured after her house collapsed during heavy rain in Muradpur village under Chail block of Kaushambi district on Monday morning. The incident took place around 7 am when Seema Devi, wife of Ramchandra, was going to a nearby submersible pump to fetch water. According to villagers, the mud-and-thatch house suddenly collapsed and trapped her under the debris. Family members and local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of the collapse. They removed the rubble and pulled Seema Devi out. She had suffered serious injuries. She was taken to a private hospital, where her condition was reported to be critical.
