Light is new heavy
India, Nov. 1 -- Festive glitter is out in full force across Hazratganj, Aminabad, Mahanagar and Gomti Nagar.
Step into any showroom across the City of Nawabs, and you'll notice a distinct shift in how Lucknowites are buying gold and silver. With 24 carat gold trading around Rs.14,214 per gram and fine silver at Rs.1,96,908 per kg, shoppers are moving away from heavy, locker-bound pieces. Instead, high-concept designs, lightweight engineering, 14K/18K gold, and diamonds have emerged as the absolute stars of the season.
Chunky, traditional 22K gold sets may have taken a backseat as Lucknow's jewellery buyers prioritise style over sheer weight. This festive season, shoppers are eyeing intricate 3D laser-cut patterns, hollowed-out Indian craftwork, and solid designing pieces that offer bold aesthetic without burning a hole in the pocket.
"With gold crossing Rs.1.4 lakh per 10 gm, Lucknow's buyers aren't asking 'kitna weight hai' anymore - they ask about design, finish, and daily wearability," says Pankaj Agarwal, a veteran jeweller at Anandi Bullion, Chowk, and an official at UP Sarafa Association.
"A design that traditionally weighed 40 grams in 22 carat is now being reconstructed in 18 carat using lightweight precision technology to weigh just 18 to 20 grams while looking just as grand. Design has completely taken centre stage over density," he adds.
Light weight, particularly 18 carat (priced around Rs.11,514/g) and 14 carat (around Rs.9,168/g) have seen a dramatic surge in demand across Lucknow showrooms.
"These options offer higher durability, are scratch resistant, and allow artisans to craft modern, delicate architectural silhouettes that fit contemporary lifestyles. Meanwhile, fine silver remains a massive hit among younger buyers. Despite silver hovering near Rs.1.96 lakh/kg, oxidised silver, 925 sterling silver stacks, and silver-base Polki sets are also being picked for festive functions and weddings," says Vinayak Rastogi of BD Jewellers, Alambagh.
Interestingly, the gold price rally has pushed many Lucknow shoppers straight into the arms of diamonds - especially lab-grown diamonds (LGDs). Shoppers reason that if they are allocating a significant budget, they might as well get the sparkle and luxury status of a diamond piece over plain gold. "When a simple gold chain crosses Rs.1.5 lakh with taxes and making charges, customers realize that for the exact same budget, they can walk out with a certified diamond solitaire pendant or a 14 carat diamond tennis bracelet," explains Ananya V Singh, a store director in Mahanagar. "Diamonds in Lucknow have transformed from an aspirational 'someday' purchase into an everyday fashion statement."...
