LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Sept. 13 -- A leopard hiding in a sugarcane field attacked a 51-year-old farmer, Chandrika, of Sahtepurwa village, in the South Nighasan range of the Dudhwa buffer zone on Saturday morning. The attack took place when he was collecting fodder for his livestock. Chandrika bravely resisted the attack and raised an alarm. Farmers working in nearby fields rushed to his rescue and shooed away the big cat. Chandrika sustained serious injuries in his abdominal area and was rushed to the district hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable. Forest officer Akhilesh Rawat, along with field staff, rushed to the spot and carried out combing and search operations to drive away the leopard from areas near human habitation. Following demands from panicked villagers, a cage was set up at an identified spot to capture the errant big cat. South Nighasan range officer Mobin Arif confirmed the incident and said patrolling in the leopard's movement area was being intensified. He added that villagers had also been advised to remain alert in view of big cat movements in the region and observe all precautions.
