Leopard attack in Katarniaghat leaves farmer hurt, fear rampant
Bahraich, June 18 -- A leopard attacked and injured a farmer in Chandanpur village under Motipur forest range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) on Wednesday morning.
Akhtar alias Jhanku, 32, a farmer from Chandanpur Gram Panchayat under the Motipur Forest Range, had gone to his fields on Wednesday morning when a leopard hidden in a sugarcane crop suddenly attacked him.
The unsuspecting farmer suffered claw and bite wounds on his abdomen, arms, and other parts of his body before nearby villagers rushed to his rescue. The leopard fled towards the forest as villagers approached.
The injured farmer was immediately taken to the Motipur Community Health Centre, where he is undergoing treatment. On being informed forest officials reached the site and launched a monitoring operation.
The latest attack has intensified concerns over the increasing movement of leopards and tigers into human settlements around Katarniaghat.
Villagers allege that sightings of a leopard had been repeatedly reported, but preventive measures were inadequate. Residents have demanded the immediate installation of cages, enhanced forest patrolling, and swift capture of the animal.
Motipur range officer Surendra Kumar Tiwari confirmed Wednesday's attack and said the injured farmer is out of danger. He stated that forest personnel have been deployed in the area and that a cage would be installed if leopard movement is detected again....
