Left parties hold march, accusegovt of curbing protests
LUCKNOW, April 24 -- Raising concerns over alleged suppression of labour movements, Left parties on Wednesday staged a joint protest in the city and marched to the collectorate, where a memorandum addressed to the governor was submitted through the district administration. The memorandum sought the release of arrested workers, withdrawal of cases and initiation of talks with labour unions.
The protest, held under the banner of the United Left Front, began near the BSNL office at Globe Park. Leaders and workers marched to the collectorate, accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of curbing democratic rights and denying permission for peaceful protests by workers, farmers and opposition groups.
Recent labour unrest in Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida remained at the centre of the protest. Demonstrators alleged that workers demanding better wages, eight-hour shifts and improved working conditions were met with police action instead of dialogue.
CPI state secretary Arvind Raj Swaroop, along with Kanti Mishra and Parmanand, took part in the protest. CPI(M) leaders Madhu Garg, Praveen Singh, Sushila, Vandana Roy and KK Chaturvedi were also present. Representatives of CITU, including Surajit Mukherjee and Hemant Singh, also joined the march....
