LUCKNOW, Aug. 13 -- Several events were organised to mark National Librarian's Day in the city on Wednesday. The day commemorated the 134th birth anniversary of SR Ranganathan, the father of library science in India. At Lucknow University's Tagore Library auditorium, chief guest Prof Arvind Mohan, dean faculty of arts said libraries are the soul of the university. "The nature and role of libraries are constantly evolving. It is the need of the hour to reconnect students with libraries, as knowledge is the most important of the five driving forces shaping the 21st century, universities and libraries have a crucial role in the creation and dissemination of knowledge," said Mohan. Prof Roli Mishra, honorary librarian, Tagore Library said students will be encouraged to use the library through modern and updated facilities. Besides, Prof Dhruv Sen Singh, president, Lucknow University Alumni Association, said books give permanence to knowledge and remain reliable and authentic sources. Prof Vineet Verma, superintendent, Works Department, said librarians are custodians of the knowledge source. He called for integrating databases of books and resources from all university departments to develop Tagore Library as a comprehensive information centre. At the Co-operative Lending Library (CLL) of Lucknow University, the programme was presided over by Prof Raghavendra Pratap Singh, president of CLL, who described libraries as important centres of knowledge, learning and social development, and a hub crucial to the progress of any educational institution. At the Amir-ud-Daula Public Library, a 'Silent Reading Session' was organised in which retired IPS officer Kiran Yadav was present. The library administration announced that the session will now be held every Sunday in two shifts, from 8am to 10am and 4pm to 6pm, on the library lawn. Readers can access books from the library's 'Bookmark Cafeteria' or bring their own.
