PRAYAGRAJ, June 9 -- Tension between lawyers and doctors in Prayagraj escalated once again on Monday after high court advocate Jagriti Shukla died during treatment at SGPGI Lucknow, nearly 20 days after she was injured in a road accident. The death triggered fresh protests by lawyers, while junior doctors at SRN Hospital launched a strike against police action taken in connection with the earlier clash between the two groups. Junior doctors at SRN Hospital also intensified their agitation after police reportedly detained three doctors, including Dr Moshin Ali, a junior resident in the surgery department from his house in Rampur on Monday. In protest, the doctors disrupted services at the OPD, registration counters, medicine distribution centres and trauma centre. Hospital authorities said more than 2,500 patients returned without treatment due to the strike, while over 40 scheduled surgeries had to be postponed. Emergency healthcare services were badly affected throughout the day. The Allahabad Medical Association (AMA) on Monday expressed resentment over the detention of the junior doctor from Rampur and warned of a statewide agitation if what it termed one-sided action continued. The decision was taken during a meeting held on Monday evening under AMA president Dr Ashok Kumar Mishra. Members of the medical fraternity first paid tribute to Jagriti Shukla, whose death during treatment in Lucknow triggered fresh tension between lawyers and doctors in Prayagraj. A two-minute silence was observed and prayers were offered for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family. Lawyers gathered at the Allahabad high court premises and raised slogans demanding the arrest of doctors accused in the May 20 violence at SRN Hospital. Later, a large number of advocates staged a sit-in protest at Eklavya Crossing, blocking the road and causing massive traffic congestion across the Civil Lines area. Jagriti Shukla had suffered critical injuries on May 20 when her scooter was allegedly hit by a car near Indira Gandhi Crossing while she was on her way to the high court. She was rushed to SRN Hospital by fellow advocates, where an argument over her treatment reportedly escalated into a violent clash between lawyers and junior doctors. The incident had led to protests, strikes and road blockades by both groups for three consecutive days. Fresh unrest broke out on Monday after news of her death spread among members of the legal fraternity. Lawyers demanded strict action against those responsible for the incident and accused the police of delaying action in the road accident case. According to police sources, Jagriti's father, Pawan Shukla, had lodged an FIR at Civil Lines police station on May 21 on the basis of the car's registration number, but no significant action was taken for nearly 20 days. Following her death, the Civil Lines police detained the alleged driver, said to be a retired official living in Ashok Nagar, and initiated further legal proceedings....
