Meerut, Aug. 25 -- Lawyers in Sardhana town of Mathura district on Monday boycotted work and staged a protest against the police action taken against two youths who allegedly filmed and circulated a video of a primary school in Kaland village on social media. The lawyers demanded immediate relief for the two youths and action against the police sub-inspector who registered the case, warning that the agitation would be intensified if their demands were not addressed. The controversy began on August 15 when Sardhana residents Sanyam Panchal, a lawyer, and Ayan recorded a video of the primary school in Kaland village and shared it on social media. The video highlighted what was claimed to be the poor condition of the school building, along with concerns over drinking water, toilets and sanitation facilities. The Education Department, however, termed the video misleading and clarified that the building shown in the footage had already been declared dilapidated and unsafe and the school was no longer being operated from that building. Following the circulation of the video, the Block Education Officer lodged an FIR against Panchal and Ayan, alleging that the video had tarnished the image of the Education Department and the government. Police arrested the two youths on Sunday and sent them to court on charges related to breach of peace. After they were denied bail by the SDM court, both were sent to jail. Panchal is a practicing lawyer, according to members of the Sardhana Bar. When the matter came before the Sardhana Bar on Monday, lawyers announced a boycott of work and staged a protest. A delegation subsequently met Sardhana circle officer Ashutosh Kumar and SDM Udit Narayan Sengar. The lawyers claimed that officials were not informed that Panchal was a lawyer. The delegation demanded the suspension of the sub-inspector and sought immediate relief for both youths. The lawyers also urged the SDM to grant them bail without delay. Bar Association president Syed Arif Ali, general secretary Sanjeev Panwar, Jitendra Panchal, Mohammad Danish, Deepak Kumar and several other lawyers were present during the protest and meeting with officials. SDM Udit Narayan Sengar said that information had emerged that the youths had made a misleading video.
