Lawyers block road outside district court over FIR against colleague
PRAYAGRAJ, July 16 -- Lawyers staged a major protest on Wednesday, blocking the road outside the district court to demand action against the Georgetown police following an assault case filed against an advocate. The demonstration involved protesters burning tires, shouting slogans against the police administration, and engaging in heated exchanges with officers.
The agitation lasted nearly seven hours, causing severe traffic disruptions. The blockade was lifted only after police registered a counter-FIR and transferred the station house officer (SHO) of the Georgetown police station to police lines.
The protest stemmed from a dispute involving a restaurant operator who had allegedly occupied a property owned by an advocate in the Georgetown area. Lawyers claimed that rent and water bills had gone unpaid for a long time and alleged that illegal activities were occurring on the premises.
According to the protesting lawyers, after repeated complaints to authorities went unaddressed, the advocate locked the premises two days ago. While a compromise was reportedly reached at the police station, lawyers alleged that the Georgetown police subsequently registered a case against the advocate based on a complaint from the restaurant operator.
Angered by this action, lawyers gathered outside the district court, demanding the removal of serious charges, the registration of a counter-FIR, and the suspension of the Georgetown SHO. To maintain order, police personnel were deployed from the Colonelganj, Civil Lines, and Cantonment stations.
DCP (City) Manish Shandilya initially attempted to negotiate with the protesters, but they remained firm. The deadlock was resolved around 6 pm following the intervention of additional police commissioner Ajaypal Sharma. "The Georgetown SHO has been transferred to police lines," DCP Shandilya said. "A counter-FIR has been registered based on the lawyer's complaint, and the matter is under investigation."...
