Knp-Jhansi train stalls for over 2 hrs, people walk it in the heat
KANPUR, June 11 -- A train on the Kanpur-Jhansi rail section remained stranded for over two hours near Garhmau, around 14 km from Jhansi, on Wednesday after scheduled track maintenance work exceeded its allotted time, prompting some passengers to walk towards the city in the scorching heat.
Train number 20104 from Kanpur was halted near Garhmau at about 10:09 am and remained stationary for 2 hours and 16 minutes, railway officials said.
Videos purportedly showing passengers carrying luggage and walking along railway tracks and nearby roads later went viral on social media, triggering speculation about an engine failure and criticism of railway operations.
However, railway authorities denied any mechanical fault, saying the delay was caused by a planned maintenance exercise involving re-welding work on a railway bridge in the Jhansi-Mustara block section. An operational block had been scheduled on both up and down lines from 6:20 am to 10:20 am.
Jhansi division public relations officer Pradeep Sudele said the work, aimed at strengthening track safety and bridge infrastructure, took longer than expected because of technical complications.
"The work could not be completed within the estimated time and required an additional 2 hours and 16 minutes," he said.
Officials said the train was held under controlled conditions at Garhmau station and was cleared after the work was completed, reaching Jhansi at 1:10 pm.
The railway administration rejected claims of an engine failure and maintained that the disruption was solely linked to infrastructure maintenance....
