LUCKNOW, June 5 -- Fast-track drainage work, remove encroachments and improve sanitation. Those were the directives issued by Uttar Pradesh finance and parliamentary affairs minister and Lucknow district in-charge Suresh Khanna during an inspection on Thursday. Khanna inspected four wards in the city's Zone-4. Accompanied by mayor Sushma Kharkwal and senior municipal officials, Khanna inspected Khargapur Sarsawan, Bharwara-Malhaur, Chinhat First and Rajiv Gandhi First wards, focusing on drainage, sanitation, traffic management and public amenities. The inspection highlighted several civic shortcomings, including unfinished drainage infrastructure, garbage dumping on vacant plots and encroachments in busy market areas. The most significant direction came in Khargapur Sarsawan ward, where Khanna reviewed the under-construction drain near Sankat Mochan Gate in Gomti Nagar Extension. He instructed officials to complete the project by June 19, warning against delays that could lead to waterlogging and inconvenience residents. In Bharwara-Malhaur ward, Khanna ordered immediate cleaning of vacant plots that had become dumping sites and directed zonal officials to issue notices to plot owners for construction of boundary walls. Officials said the move will help improve sanitation and prevent misuse of private land. Traffic congestion and illegal encroachments emerged as major concerns in Chinhat First ward. During an inspection of the Chinhat Chauraha market area, the minister directed authorities to remove encroachments and develop a dedicated parking facility to improve traffic flow. The inspection also brought positive feedback from Rajiv Gandhi First ward, where sanitation and maintenance arrangements at the PCTS facility near Mithai Wala Chauraha were found satisfactory.
