LUCKNOW, July 25 -- The department of obstetrics and gynaecology at King George's Medical University (KGMU) has performed Uttar Pradesh's first robotic hysterectomy in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of a government medical college, claimed KGMU officials on Friday. The procedure was performed on July 22 on a 51-year-old woman from Gorakhpur suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding and morbid obesity (BMI 43). Doctors said they chose robotic-assisted surgery to minimise obesity-related surgical complications and facilitate faster recovery. The patient is stable and is expected to be discharged soon. The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr Anjoo Agarwal using robotic surgical facilities supported through CSR funding. According to KGMU, the patient incurred a cost of around Rs.10,000 for the procedure, compared with an estimated Rs.4-5 lakh at private hospitals.
