VARANASI, Sept. 19 -- Commonly known as the 'key-hole cardiac surgery', the Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery (MICS CABG) has been successfully performed for the first time at Sir Sunderlal Hospital and in the Purvanchal region by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery team led by Dr Arvind Pandey. This facility was previously available mainly in major metropolitan cities, but is now also available at Sir Sunderlal Hospital of the Banaras Hindu University. A 52-year-old patient from Varanasi had severe and calcified blockages in the coronary arteries, resulting in recurrent chest pain and episodes of heart attack. Following the necessary investigations, the patient was advised to undergo MICS CABG surgery. Conventionally, coronary artery bypass surgery is performed by opening the chest through an incision in the sternum (front bone of the chest) whereas in this minimally invasive procedure, the surgery is performed through a small incision without opening the chest. The bypass surgery was successfully performed through an approximately 8-centimetre incision between the ribs on the left side of the chest.
