PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 23 -- A cyber fraud case was registered on Tuesday after fraudsters allegedly duped a Kaushambi man of Rs.6.29 lakh by promising handsome returns through cryptocurrency trading and prepaid tasks. Police registered the case following a delayed complaint and launched an investigation. Mohd Kesar, a resident of Rakswara village under the Karari police station area, said two unidentified persons contacted him through social media on August 24. They promised attractive returns through prepaid tasks and cryptocurrency trading and subsequently connected him through separate Instagram and Telegram accounts. During their conversations, the accused allegedly persuaded him to transfer money several times into different bank accounts in the name of investment. The victim said he transferred the money online using his own and his brother's bank accounts. After depositing a total of Rs.6,29,186, Kesar allegedly received none of the promised returns. When he tried contacting the accused, the mobile numbers they had used remained switched off for several days. He then realised that he had been duped and approached the police on Monday evening. Cyber police station in-charge Rajkumar Valmiki said an investigation was underway based on technical evidence. The police were also coordinating with the concerned banks to facilitate the recovery of the defrauded amount, he added. Three alleged members of an inter-state cannabis smuggling gang were arrested from the Preetnagar area under Chopan police station in Sonbhadra, police said. Sonbhadra police recovered 1 quintal 340 grams of illicit cannabis, estimated to be worth around Rs.50 lakh, along with a car, three mobile phones and Rs.1,210 in cash, circle officer Randhir Mishra said. The total estimated value of the recoveries is around Rs.62 lakh, police said, adding that a joint police team arrested the three accused in connection with inter-state cannabis smuggling.
