Jully, Gehlot target BJP over ULB poll campaign
Jaipur, Sept. 10 -- Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday attacked the BJP government over its campaign for the urban local body elections, alleging that the government was using official machinery and pressure to influence voters and had failed to deliver on its development promises.
Addressing reporters, Jully alleged that the Bhajan Lal Sharma government was trying to intimidate voters during the civic polls. He claimed that BJP leaders and candidates were threatening voters and misusing government resources and money to influence the election.
"Congress is ahead in many places, but the BJP and the government are trying to scare voters," Jully said. He alleged that videos of BJP legislators threatening voters had surfaced and claimed that a BJP candidate in Alwar had assaulted an independent candidate, leaving him injured and hospitalised.
Jully said elections were a festival of democracy and alleged that the BJP was attempting to influence the electoral atmosphere through the use of power and pressure. He also criticised chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's roadshow in Jaipur, calling it unsuccessful. Referring to the chief minister's roadshow in Alwar, he said it was unusual for a chief minister to campaign personally in urban local body elections. "If the government has worked, the chief minister should seek votes on the basis of that work and present an account of the last three years before the people," Jully said. He questioned why the chief minister was holding roadshows instead of addressing public meetings and highlighting the government's achievements.
Targeting BJP's "triple-engine government" pitch, Jully said voters would not be persuaded by the slogan as, according to him, the government had failed to deliver during its tenure.
He referred to the condition of roads and development works in Alwar, including the ward of state minister Sanjay Sharma, and said the rainfall a day before the chief minister's roadshow had exposed the condition of civic infrastructure....
