JPC on simultaneous polls reaches Lucknow, consultations begin today
Lucknow, July 13 -- The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 'One Nation, One Election', chaired by Lok Sabha MP PP Chaudhary, arrived in Lucknow on Sunday to hold a series of consultations from Monday to Wednesday as part of its nationwide study visit to gather stakeholder perspectives on implementing simultaneous elections across the country.
"'One Nation, One Election' is a major electoral reform. The committee has come to Lucknow after visiting nearly nine states. We are travelling to different states to interact with all stakeholders and seek their views," Chaudhary said, speaking to reporters.
On Monday, the JPC will hold discussions with the chief secretary, director general of police, senior officials of the finance, home, education, tourism, agriculture, industries, health and labour departments, besides the chief electoral officer, to seek their views on simultaneous elections.
It will later interact with senior advocates and representatives of the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association and the Oudh Bar Association.
This will followed by consultations with representatives of public sector undertakings and central organisations, including National Fertilizers Limited, Central Bank of India, Food Corporation of India, NAFED, Northern Railways, RVNL, Coal India and POWERGRID.
On Tuesday, the committee will interact with members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature, the state political executive, and leaders of national and regional political parties. It will also meet representatives of trade and industry bodies, including the Indian Industries Association, Merchant Chambers of Uttar Pradesh, Laghu Udhyog Bharati, EXIM Bank and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development, before calling on the governor.
On Wednesday, the JPC will consult representatives of leading academic institutions, including the University of Lucknow, IIM Lucknow, IIT Kanpur, Banaras Hindu University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University and the University of Allahabad. It will conclude its visit with interactions with eminent personalities and members of the local and regional media before dispersing.
Former Union minister Parshottam Rupala, a member of the JPC, said, "We have come to Lucknow as members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on One Nation, One Election to interact with stakeholders."...
