LUCKNOW, July 31 -- Maharajganj police have arrested an alleged operative of an international cyber fraud syndicate and seized a sophisticated 32-slot SIM box, 151 active SIM cards, forged identity documents and other electronic equipment used to facilitate cybercrime. The accused, identified as Mohammad Nabish, 28, a resident of Islampur village in Bihar's Madhubani district, was arrested by the Cyber Crime Police Station, Maharajganj, as part of the state's ongoing "Cyber Fraud and Hotspot" campaign. According to police, the accused was operating a SIM box gateway, a device that converts international Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls into local mobile calls. This setup enables cybercriminals to conceal the actual origin of calls and impersonate domestic callers while targeting Indian victims. Cyber officials said Nabish was called to the station for questioning, during which he allegedly confessed to operating the illegal setup. He was subsequently arrested on Wednesday, produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Police stated that the accused procured active SIM cards using either the names of unsuspecting individuals or forged documents from various telecom service providers. These cards were inserted into the SIM box, allowing international calls to appear as local mobile traffic. Investigators noted that the technology helps fraudsters hide the true source of calls while facilitating crimes such as OTP fraud, phishing, impersonation and financial scams. The illegal operation also caused revenue losses to telecom companies by bypassing legitimate international calling routes. During the raid, police recovered one 32-slot SIM box, 151 active SIM cards. two keypad mobile phones, two forged Aadhaar cards, etc. A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station under relevant provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and the Information Technology Act.
