Inter-state gang targeting locked houses busted in Lucknow, six arrested
Lucknow, Aug. 17 -- An inter-district gang allegedly involved in scouting locked houses and carrying out daytime burglaries in Indiranagar was busted on Sunday, with police arresting six people, including the alleged mastermind and a jeweller accused of buying stolen valuables.
The arrests were made by the Indiranagar police and surveillance team in connection with four burglaries reported between June and August. Police said cash, silver-coloured jewellery, a car and a motorcycle were recovered from the accused.
According to ADCP (East) Amol Murkut, the gang would target residential colonies during the day after identifying houses that had been left locked. Two members would enter the houses, often by jumping over walls or using rooftops, while the others stayed outside to keep watch.
The gang allegedly used a crowbar and hammer to break locks before escaping with cash and jewellery within minutes. Police said the stolen valuables were later sold to jeweller Durga Shankar Verma in the Chowk area.
Among those arrested are alleged gang leader Bablu alias Manoj, 48, who has 10 criminal cases against him, cab driver Akhilesh Kumar Gautam, 38, and vegetable seller Arvind Yadav alias Dharvindra, 23. The other accused have been identified as Arjun Pandey, 25, and Mohammad Siraj alias Raju, 20. Verma, 56, was also arrested.
Police said the accused were caught after a team led by inspector Ajay Narayan Singh laid a trap near the Badshahkheda canal. Based on information provided by the accused, police subsequently raided Verma's premises in Chowk and arrested him.
The four burglaries took place on June 8, June 12, July 31 and August 13, when the accused allegedly broke into locked houses and stole cash and jewellery.
Police recovered Rs.52,400 in cash along with jewellery and the vehicles allegedly used by the gang. The accused have been sent to judicial custody....
