Instagram activity leads police to woman wanted in Meerut robbery case
MEERUT, July 5 -- A woman was arrested from Haridwar for her alleged involvement in a robbery case in Meerut district after police tracked her through her Instagram activity while she was allegedly on the run. The case was registered on the complaint of an employee of an online payment company.
The accused, identified as Jyoti Chaudhary, had earlier mocked the police in a social media video, claiming they would never be able to catch her. Investigators said her continued activity on Instagram eventually helped them trace and arrest her. According to police, Jyoti Chaudhary, a resident of Chhuchhai village under the Kithore police station limits in Meerut, had been absconding since she was named in a robbery case registered on June 12.
Circle officer Ashutosh Kumar said Jyoti married Mohit Nagar on June 23, and the couple travelled to Haridwar soon after the wedding. Despite being wanted in the case, she remained active on Instagram, enabling investigators to trace her location through technical surveillance. She was arrested in Haridwar on Saturday morning, he said.
Investigators allege that in an effort to finance an expensive lifestyle, she became involved in robbery and theft cases along with her husband.
The case relates to a robbery that occurred on the night of June 12. Akash Sharma, a team leader with Paytm's Baraut zone and a resident of Mujahidpur village under the Ratanpuri police station limits in Muzaffarnagar district, was returning home on his motorcycle when he was allegedly intercepted near Pali Bridge on the Sardhana-Pali Kanwar route.
According to Sharma's complaint, four assailants travelling on two motorcycles stopped him, assaulted him, and robbed him of his motorcycle and mobile phone. He told police that a young woman was also among the attackers.
Police had earlier arrested three other accused in the case and recovered the stolen motorcycle, the victim's mobile phone, and the motorcycle used in the commission of the crime.
With Jyoti Chaudhary's arrest, investigators are now probing the involvement of other members of the alleged gang and examining whether the group was linked to additional robbery and theft incidents in the region.htc...
