PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 18 -- The indefinite sit-in staged for renaming of Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital (SRNH) after revolutionary martyr Amar Shaheed Thakur Roshan Singh, was suspended on its 13th day following assurances from MLA Siddharth Nath Singh, who visited the protest site as a government representative. Singh held detailed discussions with Kalam Rana of the Mahua Dabar Museum besides other protestors. He also paid floral tribute to Thakur Roshan Singh at the martyr's memorial and expressed commitment to addressing the protesters' concerns. The agitation was based on an eight-point charter of demands, with the principal demand being the renaming of Swaroop Rani Nehru Divisional Hospital as "Amar Shaheed Thakur Roshan Singh Hospital." Protesters said the move would be a fitting tribute to the freedom fighter. Other demands included preserving and maintaining the martyr's park and statue site, correcting historical inaccuracies related to Thakur Roshan Singh, and renaming the Civil Lines intersection near the divisional hospital as "Amar Shaheed Thakur Roshan Singh Chauraha." The agitators also sought state-level commemorative programmes and a ceremonial gun salute to mark the centenary of Thakur Roshan Singh's martyrdom, beginning on December 19, 2026. They further demanded that the divisional hospital be upgraded into a modern model healthcare institution. Remaining demands include publishing a research volume on the history of Malaka Jail based on archival records, installing CCTV cameras and appointing a nodal officer for security and monitoring at the martyr's statue site, and including Thakur Roshan Singh's martyrdom site in the Freedom Struggle Circuit and the tourism map of Uttar Pradesh. Following Siddharth Nath Singh's assurance that the government would positively consider and pursue the demands, the protesters announced the suspension of the agitation.
