INA trials united people across country, says Subhashini Ali
LUCKNOW, May 25 -- Subhashini Ali, senior CPI (M) leader and former MP, on Sunday said the trials of Indian National Army (INA) soldiers during the freedom struggle deeply influenced public opinion and united people across the country. She was speaking at the launch of senior journalist Ashis Ray's book 'The Trial That Shook Britain' at the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy in Gomti Nagar.
The event focused on the historical significance of the INA trials and their impact on India's Independence movement. "In today's times, people are often quick to decide who is patriotic and who is anti-national," she added. Referring to the Red Fort trials of three INA soldiers, the former MP said public sentiment gradually turned in favour of the soldiers who came to be viewed as national heroes.
"At the same time, those who did not join the INA began to be seen by many as supporters of the British," Ali said, adding that the movement demanding the release of the three soldiers had drawn support from across the country.
She also spoke about criticism faced by the Communist Party over its opposition to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose during that period. She said the criticism was partly justified, but added that communists were also actively involved in the movement demanding the release of the INA soldiers.
Author Ashis Ray said his book attempts to revisit a lesser-known chapter of the freedom struggle and examine how the trials created pressure on the British administration. He said the emotional public response to the court martial proceedings played an important role in shaping the final phase of India's Independence movement....
