Meerut, May 31 -- Sambhal police have registered a case against the Imam of Sambhal's Jama Masjid, his brother, and several unidentified persons over allegations of illegally occupying government land and constructing a mosque, dargah, and residential buildings on it, officials said on Saturday. The FIR was lodged at Sambhal police station following a complaint by Lekhpal Mukesh Kumar Yadav, who alleged that the accused had encroached upon land reserved for plantation purposes and raised permanent structures on it. The disputed property is located in Saif Khan Sarai village under the Pawansa block area of Sambhal tehsil and is recorded as Gata No. 452. According to official records, the plot measures 0.1340 hectares, approximately two bighas, and is classified as government land. Authorities estimate its current market value at nearly Rs.6.94 crore. Superintendent of police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said on Saturday that a case has been registered against Aftab Hussain, Imam of the disputed religious site, and his brother Mehtab Hussain. The FIR pertains to the long-running dispute involving the Shri Harihar Temple and Shahi Jama Masjid site. The criminal case comes amid ongoing revenue proceedings concerning the alleged encroachment. Earlier, final arguments were heard in the court of the District Magistrate in a case filed by Sambhal Tehsildar Dhirendra Kumar Singh against Imam Aftab Hussain Warsi and his brother. The proceedings relate to the alleged unauthorized occupation of government land and the construction of religious and residential structures on the site. Additional district government counsel (ADGC) Gajendra Singh stated that the mosque, dargah, and related structures had been built after allegedly occupying government Gata No. 452. He said the concerned Lekhpal had submitted a report before the court, following which eviction orders were passed against the occupants. Singh further said that final arguments in the matter were completed on May 22, after which the district magistrate reserved the judgment. The court's decision is now awaited....
