LUCKNOW, June 28 -- Serious concerns have been raised over alleged violations of healthcare infrastructure norms in private hospitals across the city, with preliminary findings indicating that nearly 100 hospitals are operating critical care units from their basements. Dr NB Singh, chief medical officer (CMO), Lucknow, said the health department has initiated on-site inspections of hospitals suspected of violating prescribed standards. "Hospitals found disregarding the prescribed norms are being subjected to physical inspections. Appropriate action will be taken against institutions found violating the regulations," Dr Singh added. According to health department sources, several private hospitals have been found running intensive care units, neonatal intensive care units and paediatric intensive care units in basement areas, despite these being highly sensitive patient care facilities that require strict compliance with safety standards. Officials fear that many of these hospitals may also be violating essential norms related to fire safety, emergency evacuation, ventilation, and patient safety, potentially putting critically ill patients at risk during emergencies.
