I4C: 21,928 digital arrest cases registered in last 8 months
New Delhi, Oct. 23 -- In the past eight months, 21,928 digital arrest fraud complaints have been registered on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) involving an amount of over Rs 647 crore. The figures form part of the latest status report filed jointly by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a suo motu proceeding before the Supreme Court.
It has been a year since the court took suo motu cognisance of the menace on October 17, 2025 based on a letter received from a Haryana-based senior citizen couple who were defrauded of more than Rs 1 crore. The fraudsters kept them under digital arrest posing as officers of the CBI and Enforcement Directorate and displayed forged orders of the Supreme Court through WhatsApp calls and video conferencing.
Looking at the vulnerability of senior citizens losing their life's entire savings, orders passed by the court over the last one year have achieved results. At the time of taking suo motu cognisance, the court was confronted with a total of 123,672 digital arrest complaints involving Rs.1,935 crore. In 2025, the complaints came down to 58,239 with a monetary value of Rs.1,211 crore.
The latest status report filed by the I4C and MHA on October 7 highlights that action against the digital arrest menace is a work in progress....
