LUCKNOW, Aug. 3 -- What began as a missing person complaint filed by a husband ended with police unravelling an alleged murder conspiracy, arresting the complainant himself and his alleged lover for killing his wife and dumping her body in the Gomti to erase evidence. "The accused, identified as 31-year-old Umendra Pratap Singh, an Ola cab driver from Rahimabad, approached Rahimabad police on July 31 claiming that his wife, Anjali Singh, had gone missing during the night of July 30-31. Police registered a missing person report and launched a search," said SHO Anil Kr Trigunayak. "Hours later, an unidentified woman's body was recovered from the Gomti in Itaunja police station limits. The body was subsequently identified by family members as that of Anjali," the SHO added. Following a complaint by the victim's brother, Rahimabad police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, causing disappearance of evidence and common intention, and initiated an investigation. According to police, the breakthrough came through technical surveillance, mobile phone location analysis and other electronic evidence, which contradicted the husband's version of events. Umendra was arrested on the night of August 1 near Adaura Mod. During interrogation, police said, he confessed to conspiring with his alleged lover, Aarti Verma, 31, a call centre employee, to murder Anjali. Investigators said Anjali had recently learnt about her husband's alleged relationship with Aarti and had been opposing it, leading to frequent disputes. On the night of July 30-31, the duo allegedly smothered Anjalito death and then transported her body in a car and dumped it into the Gomti in Itaunja. Police alleged that after disposing of the body, Umendra removed Anjali's jewellery from the house and handed it over to Aarti before visiting the police station himself to report her missing. Investigators said the move was intended to create the impression that Anjali had left home voluntarily after taking her ornaments. "During the investigation, police arrested Aarti and recovered 32 gold and silver ornaments belonging to the victim, two Android mobile phones and the car allegedly used in the crime. The recovered jewellery is estimated to be worth Rs.8-10 lakh," the SHO said....
