PRAYAGRAJ, July 2 -- The Centre has approved a Rs.14.52-crore revamp of the historic Chandrashekhar Azad Park under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, with plans to upgrade tourism infrastructure and enhance the park's aesthetic appeal while preserving its historical legacy.
The park, which houses the martyrdom site of freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad, is set to be developed as a major tourist destination. The tourism department has entrusted the execution of the project to the Uttar Pradesh Project Corporation Limited, and work has already begun, district officials said.
Project manager Sankalp Verma said the redevelopment plan comprises 11 components, with a tourism information centre and a travellers' nook among the key attractions.
The travellers' nook, proposed near Gate No. 3 of the park close to St. Joseph's Church, will feature a cafeteria with seating and refreshment facilities for visitors.
The project also includes an adventure park for children, landscaping and beautification across the park, and the redesign of the platform around the revered Kalpavriksha tree in the shape of a lotus to enhance its visual appeal.
Spread over nearly 133 acres in the heart of Prayagraj, Chandrashekhar Azad Park-formerly known as Alfred Park and popularly called Company Bagh-is one of the city's most prominent heritage landmarks. Established in 1870 during the British era, the park occupies a unique place in India's freedom struggle as the site where revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad made his last stand against British forces on February 27, 1931, choosing death over surrender.
The park is also home to the Azad memorial, the Allahabad Museum and the Allahabad Public Library, making it a major attraction for history enthusiasts and tourists alike....
