Heavy rain, storm wreak havoc in Saharanpur; two killed
Meerut, May 30 -- A powerful storm accompanied by torrential rain and hailstorm late Thursday night caused massive destruction across Saharanpur district, with the Maa Shakambhari Devi area witnessing the worst devastation. Sudden flooding in seasonal rivers and drains swept away more than a dozen vehicles, while two people lost their lives in separate incidents linked to the strong water current.
According to local authorities, the heavy rainfall in the hilly regions triggered a sudden surge in water flow in rivers and rain-fed streams near the Shakambhari Devi temple area. Within minutes, water levels rose rapidly and reached the roads, trapping and sweeping away nearly 10 to 12 vehicles parked nearby. Local residents spent the entire night searching for missing vehicles as rescue teams continued operations till morning.
In one of the incidents, Savitri, wife of Chandrabhan Singh, was swept away by the strong current and died. Another unidentified man also lost his life after getting trapped in the floodwaters. Rescue teams and local residents launched an overnight operation, but both victims could not be saved. Their bodies were later recovered.
Despite the severity of the incidents, officials said the administration has yet to issue an official confirmation regarding the deaths.
The storm also caused extensive damage across Saharanpur city. Strong winds uprooted green nets and temporary structures installed by the Municipal Corporation in several areas. Iron pipes, bamboo poles and debris fell onto roads, severely disrupting traffic movement.
On Friday, district magistrate Arvind Kumar Chauhan and senior superintendent of police Abhinandan visited the Shakambhari Devi temple area. They reviewed the security arrangements and ongoing relief operations. SP Rural, CO Behat, and other administrative officials were also present during the visit. The officials assessed the situation on the ground and inspected the damage caused by the strong water flow.
By Friday morning, major roads across the city witnessed long traffic jams as commuters struggled to navigate blocked routes. Several two-wheeler riders narrowly escaped accidents after skidding near scattered debris.
In addition to traffic disruption, several trees and electricity poles were damaged due to the high-speed winds. Waterlogging persisted in low-lying areas and on roads leading to the Shakambhari Devi temple.
Police and administrative officials rushed to the affected areas soon after receiving information and reviewed the situation. Relief and rescue operations continued late into the night, while authorities appealed to people to avoid rivers, drains and rain-fed routes during adverse weather conditions.
The administration has urged citizens to remain alert as weather conditions are expected to remain unstable in the region....
