PRAYAGRAJ, May 28 -- Prayagraj and other parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to get some relief from the intense heatwave after May 28, with weather experts forecasting storms and light showers for three to four days. The respite, however, is expected to be short-lived, as temperatures may rise again in the first week of June due to pre-monsoon activity, eventually leading to the arrival of the monsoon by the third week of the month. Prof BN Mishra, a weather expert and former head of the geography department at Allahabad University, said the ongoing heatwave is a sign of the approaching monsoon. He explained that prolonged high temperatures help create low-pressure areas over the region, which in turn allow moisture-laden, high-pressure winds to move into the Gangetic plains. Mishra noted that when the mercury remains consistently high for several days, it sets the stage for weather changes, including the possibility of rain, thunderstorms, and even hail in some northern parts of the country. According to him, several parts of north India, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh, along with areas near the Himalayan foothills, are likely to receive rainfall and hailstorms in the coming days. Snowfall may also occur in higher altitude regions. He added that moisture-bearing winds have already started reaching the plains, especially during the morning hours. Some districts in UP, including Deoria, have already witnessed light rainfall in the past 24 hours. Increasing cloud cover over several regions has also signaled a gradual shift in weather conditions. For over 10 days, maximum temperatures in Prayagraj have remained above 45degC, placing the city among the hottest in the country, along with Banda, Agra, Jhansi, Orai and Kanpur. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was measured at 46.4degC. These expected weather changes are likely to bring some much-needed relief to residents battling the prolonged heat....
