Kolkata, Oct. 7 -- Polling took place across six constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry on Tuesday, with the contests being closely watched as a test of the BJP, Congress, regional parties and Tamil Nadu's TVK. Nandigram and Rejinagar voted in Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry and Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Nearly 79% of around 5.24 lakh electors in Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats exercised their franchise in the by-elections till 5pm on Tuesday, EC officials said. "Other than some very small incidents, polling in these two constituencies remained peaceful," an official said. In Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly Constituencies, both SC reserved segments, registered a turnout of 83.86% and 78.53%, respectively at 3 pm, according to election authorities. The Thattanchavady segment in Puducherry recorded a turnout of 78.53% per cent at 5 pm. Voting for the by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam concluded peacefully at 5pm on Tuesday as 76% of 19.05 lakh electors exercised their franchise, an official said. The by-election was necessitated as Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and successfully contested the assembly elections from Dispur on a BJP ticket earlier this year. "Voting, which commenced at 7 am, was peaceful as no untoward incident was reported from any polling station in the eight assembly segments under the Lok Sabha constituency," the official said, adding that minor glitches were reported from a few polling booths....
