Lucknow, Sept. 12 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has summoned the chief engineer, Public Works Department, and an additional municipal commissioner nominated by the municipal commissioner, Nagar Nigam, to appear before it on September 21 over traffic management in the city. A division bench of Justice Alok Mathur and Justice Amitabh Kumar Rai passed the order on September 10 while hearing a PIL filed by Suraj Singh Visen. The officers were also directed to examine the compliance report submitted in the matter. The court had earlier expressed concern over the unchecked growth of e-rickshaws, saying the state government could not "sit in a state of slumber" as pressure on Lucknow's roads increased. It had asked the government to formulate a policy to regulate them. The court was informed that 153 defects had been identified on the Polytechnic-Kamta Crossing road and sent to the concerned authorities for rectification. Nagar Nigam Lucknow said necessary measures had been taken and a report submitted to the SIT. Parking of e-rickshaws near railway stations, bus stations and major intersections was also flagged as a traffic problem. Authorities assured the court that designated parking and passenger pick-up and drop-off points would be identified. Additional Advocate General Sudeep Kumar said the state was inducting 1,028 traffic constables, 11 Traffic Inspectors and 1,277 Traffic Sub-Inspectors.
